Norton freezes during scan

We should see that corrected soon, I hope. Is an antivirus program other than Defender installed or present due to incomplete removal? Perhaps a trial version of McAfee, Norton, etc.. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. I have had the same problem. But after initial freeze, windows defender scan slowly managed to complete. Hope the scanning performance in W10 is the same as in W8. In my case I upgraded from 8.

You may need to use the McAfee cleanup tool to fully remove it. See this Wiki article: List of anti-malware product removal tools. However, here's an update: My computer was shut down before the scan completed; when I started it again, the quick scan completed fairly quickly.

It shows over , items scanned, an is still running. I'm wondering if possibly the first scan of each type i. It's not an option. So far the only thing that worked was running the scan in safe mode. But if it runs in safe mode and not regular mode, that makes me think that there is a problem that needs to be resolved. I have never had to run a scan in safe mode before.

Error Code 0x, n44, n66" I have searched for that error message, but I have not found results for this error code. In my machine, I have a boot drive C and a data drive D. Interestingly, the full system scan worked! It would have only been the C drive, but at least it worked. I tried again with both the C and the D drives connected, and the scan froze.

For over a year, it has worked fine in my computer, and I doubt that Norton has some kind of limitation on how large of a drive it can scan. Usually I would start the scan and then check back in a few hours and it would be done. Yesterday I let it run all night long, and in the morning, it still wasn't finished.

It has never taken half that time to scan my system. Earlier today I started a full system scan with both drives connected and it ran for about 30 minutes before the "Total items scanned" counter stopped increasing.

After leaving it for 6 hours, it still hasn't changed. I don't even get so far, that VBS. Runauto and several other threats are being scanned. Afterwards I restarted the PC and did a quick scan.

The PC still locks. The horizontal waiting bar the yellow-white one stands still. This is how it looks like. Try disabling compressed file scans. Then turn off the Compressed file Scanning option. Your system will still be protected by the Norton Auto Protect feature, as any compressed file is accessed.

Thank you for this piece of advice. I disabled the compressed file scans and immediately did successfully a quick scan. But, after doing a restart, then entering Norton Security but not the configuration menue and doing a manual quick scan my PC froze. I suppose this RnR does not wipe all data related to Norton Security. I would prefer doing a clean install to check if the installation is not faulty.

If you have some compressed files that have multiple folder structure, it seems to trip up Norton and cause problems with scans. As I noted, you are still protected when you try to open or view the compressed file.

You should only have to change the Compressed File Scan once. As for reinstalling Norton again, I thought you already tried that. If the Norton Removal Tool you are referring to is an old download, it has been replaced with the newer Norton Removal and Reinstall tool. To get a clean install, just follow the directions at www. SPaulovic - Pardon me for asking but is this a clean install of Win10 or an upgrade? Thanks you and have a great holidays!!

This did not resolve the lockups.
