Defraggler vs windows 7 defrag

Once a file fragment is beyond a certain size, it doesn't really matter since, for all practical intents and purposes, it's not fragmented. Is it Aug 1, 12 I've been using sysinternals contig utility.

Works for me. Jun 16, 8, One reason is that MS engineers arrived at the conclusion that the speed and size of modern drives is such that there may not be as much benefit to defragmenting large files such as videos or data files for games as there is with defragmenting smaller files.

As such the Windows defragmenter may look at a large defragmented video file and decide that leaving it defragmented won't impact the user as much because the OS and media program will have time to access the file on the HD and the user won't notice any performance degradation when watching it.

While many 3rd party defraggers will report any deframentation to the user regardless of the size of the file. As a result, defrag in XP and defrag in Vista will report different amounts of fragmentation on a volume.

So, which one is correct? Well, before the question can be answered we must understand why defrag in Vista was changed.

In Vista, we analyzed the impact of defragmentation and determined that the most significant performance gains from defrag are when pieces of files are combined into sufficiently large chunks such that the impact of disk-seek latency is not significant relative to the latency associated with sequentially reading the file.

This means that there is a point after which combining fragmented pieces of files has no discernible benefit. In fact, there are actually negative consequences of doing so.

I recommend Auslogics Disk Defrag. I have Diskeeper as well, but it doesn't catch all the fragments. Keep the settings like so; Go to the settings tab in Auslogics defragger and go to Defrag Priority and set it to High Priority. Then, in the same tab go to Program Settings If you don't wan to deal with all that, you can use Smart Defrag which will defrag when the system is idle, install and forget.

More strange is the potential loss of overall hard disk space supposedly not tied to System Restore Points, etc.

In my opinion when using 3rd party defrag tools on the system disk where Windows is installed it's better to just have them defrag only the fragmented files, i. If you do things that way your defrag's will be done surprisingly fast, you won't have to disable the built in optimization, and the built in optimization won't have to undo a ton of stuff 3rd party defrag tools do differently.

Thanks for your responses. Most of my fragmented files are large and over 64mb, so that is why windows does not see them as fragmented. Some files are gb movie files. Would you recommend choosing the "move large files to end of drive" option? Andavari means in Defraggler - Ananlyze - View Files or open the file tab - then check or highlight the specific files you want to defrag - and select 'Defrag Checked' or Defrag Highlighted.

That defragments only the specific fragmented files rather than reorganising the whole disk, so it's much quicker to do.

For me that's the modern way of defragmenting HDD's since Windows 10 has the restriction on the file size limit. You need to be a member in order to leave a comment.
