One of the most consistent causes of Endnote errors is out-of-date software. Often this comes from a concern about losing data, or rumours that updated software has compatibility issues. Actually, software updates are designed to stay ahead of compatibility issues - particularly with Microsoft Office issuing more regular and smaller feature releases rather than giant updates.
Software updates address security vulnerabilities, software bugs, and add new features over time. The easiest way to manage this is to switch on automatic updating - whether that is for MacOS, Microsoft Office, or Windows.
There's usually a big annual software update for some platforms, for example Apple's most recent update for MacOS called Mojave which replaces the previous High Sierra. Endnote also has roughly annual updates, for example X9 is a new upgrade to X8.
These kinds of big updates can't be automatically scheduled, and users need to kind of 'opt-in' by requesting the update. This is worth doing. In the past, advice has been to uninstall the old Endnote before upgrading to the new version, but this isn't essential. To ensure the safety and compatibility of Endnote Libraries especially if they aren't backed up online , we recommend installing the new software, checking that everything works fine, and then uninstalling the old software to keep the system clean.
Of course you can create a backup of your Endnote Library before doing this if you wish, just to be safe. Most compatibility bugs in Endnote can be resolved with a software update.
Sometimes when you open the. Here's the way to fix this:. Apple has released macOS Apple has made the decision to drop all bit application support, meaning that macOS We have detailed information at this link: What do Mac users need to do? Clarivate has provided this information on Big Sur compatibility.
If you choose to upgrade to Big Sur, there may be some features of Endnote that are not compatible, including the ability to automatically cite and format references. Please use the latest versions of Microsoft Word and EndNote X9 , to ensure compatibility as soon as it is available if you have already upgraded to Big Sur. Just to add one thing. I started endnote several versions ago.
At the time, you could "insert object", but not attach a file. This tags the pdf as a "figure". Therefore, all of my PDFs were attached as figures.
Although attached files are put into the RIS file, "figures" are not. Therefore I ran into trouble trying to export an RIS to put into zotero. Thankfully I found a solution: I'm not sure if other versions have this, but X2 allows you to convert figures to attachments. You can ctrl-A to select all and do this in a batch. Now your RIS file will be imported to zotero with attachments. Saved me hours. Now I have no more need for EN. Any advice much appreciated, thanks! May 26, You have pointed to something that I don't think will be easy to solve. For example, when citing a webpage you want to include the URL as part of the reference, clearly you would never want to include the local link to the PDF in a reference. Zotero has the ability to support these two different sorts of URLs. So the problem is this. May 26, edited May 26, Not sure how technically feasible this is, but what if every imported URL recognized by a Zotero translator is assumed to be the citing URL?
Just have the translator mechanism scan all incoming URLs during import. It's imperfect, but would at least mean that URLs of journal sites or other repositories that have translators are correctly assigned as more or less official. Using the Zotero translator is an interesting idea, but wouldn't that slow up the import process? The RIS text file from the Endnote export has field labels. N1 is a notes field.
