But anyway Going into this macabre monstrocity was a bit of a daunting task at first for me, because it was around this time that, I'll admit, I was a bit closed-minded about the FILTH horde as the aformentioned "Midian" left a slightly sour taste in my mouth and I felt that the band was sorta phoning it all in, not taking it seriously.
And while I did, in a way, enjoy this work at first, I was starting to have my doubts about how long I'd be a fan of the group were this stylistic decay to continue in its forthright motion thankfully, the fear was squelched by the chaotic "Damnation and a Day".
It wasn't until later on, when my views on things started to further mature as well as gain cynicism that I took this album at face value and as a result, it started to grow on me, and while it's by no means flawless, it's still a fun little venture down some of CRADLE OF FILTH's darkest and most gothic-oriented material.
Remnents of the old black metal sound are still present though sadly simmer on the backburner, but that's nothing to hold against them. The original works are top-notch blackened hymns, from the wickedly epic "Born in a Burial Gown", the depressing "Suicide and Other Comforts", to the frightening "Dinner at Deviant's Palace" However, while the music itself is dark and epic, the perfomance is a bit more middle-of-the-road than I'm used too, the production is of lesser quality mainly in the cardboardy drums and weak guitar sound , and even to this day I never took to Dani's newer vocal approach, where squeals and other assorted high-pitched madness replaced the harpy shriek peppered throughout "Dusk So in the end, this is a decent foray in the FILTH world, far better than what was being passed off as "metal" in Consider this a bit of a stumbling block until the band got back on their feet with "Damnation While there are a few songs this disk could do without, it has a few of my favorite Cradle songs ever written.
The riffs on this disk are solid, as of course are the drums, the keyboards, the vocals - everything that you expect in a CoF disk is to be found here. Where I think it goes wrong is with the special tracks - covers, remixes, etc. The drums are solid, if not a little bit quiet at times, and the same can be said about the bass. The times when Sarah decides to get involved, she still sounds good, though she seems to have less and less parts with each subsequent disk.
It has three quality songs in a row, the songwriting-oriented, guitar-driven songs that really define this disk in comparison to previous works, and serves as a transition between the orchestral, and guitar crunchy CoF disks. It has a great depressing feel, a softer song, yet definitely not a ballad, and gives a really interesting twist that is greatly needed after the two prior downer songs. As many reviews seem to agree, this is the best song on the disk, and for good reason!
The streamlined introduction that gets you ready for some head banging, and then when it kicks in with the double bass and vocals, this is a really solid song. It poses a good sense of balance, much like the entire disk does. Metal Archives loading Username Password Login. Bands alphabetical country genre Labels alphabetical country Reviews R.
